A lecture on human-factor based design principles on the first day made the start, followed by a demo-session of the VALCRI system. On the second day presentations of the PhD students included an overview of their work and updated research questions. Valuable discussions and feedback helped to plan future work and individual meetings enabled to work on concrete problems. The results of these workshops were manifold from ideas on dissemination to new studies to be planned.

IEEE Infovis 2016 Best Paper Honorable Mention https://euprojectvalcri.org/valcri/ieee-infovis-2016-best-paper-honorable-mention/ Thu, 06 Oct 2016 13:11:57 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1421 ...]]> A VALCRI research paper has been awarded Best Paper Honorable Mention at IEEE InfoVis, the premier venue for research in Data Visualization. The paper, entitled Map Lineups: Effects of Spatial Structure on Graphical Inference, considers perceptual biases introduced by Choropleth maps. As well as providing new evidence around how well humans are able to discern structure in maps, the paper contributes towards an emerging theory in data analysis of graphical inference. The award places the work amongst the top 3 of 165 papers submitted to this year’s InfoVis conference. The full paper, along with experiment data and analysis code, can be accessed from the paper’s website.

The paper will be presented on Tuesday, 25th Octoberin the InfoVis: Geovisualization paper session at IEEE InfoVis 2016 in Baltimore, US.

International Crime and Intelligence Analysis Conference 2016 https://euprojectvalcri.org/valcri/international-crime-and-intelligence-analysis-conference-2016/ Fri, 26 Feb 2016 10:44:05 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1331 ...]]> The International Crime and Intelligence Analysis Conference 2016 was held at the Manchester Central Conference Centre UK on the 25th and 26th February 2016. Opening with a plenary and continuing with four parallel sessions over the two day period with talks ranging from strategy and procedure to practical workshops VALCRI was represented by A E Solutions, West Midlands Police and i-Intelligence. West Midlands Police and i-Intelligence presented at four sessions, at the Analyst Skills Development session to a room filled to capacity which generated a series of questions and after talk discussions. There was a great deal of interest in the project and all of the printed leaflets were taken by attendees.

UI Hack Week https://euprojectvalcri.org/events/ui-hack-week/ Fri, 15 Jan 2016 09:56:25 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1316 ...]]> UI software developers gathered for a week of collaborative coding in January 2016. Seven of our partners were represented, and having so many of us in the same room allowed us to make good progress with UI development, as well as resolve issues, and plan the next phase of development. In fact, the week was such a success, we are already planning where the next one will be held, and expanding it to include the data analysis and data storage development teams.

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society: 2015 Annual Meeting https://euprojectvalcri.org/events/human-factors-and-ergonomics-society-2015-annual-meeting/ Fri, 30 Oct 2015 15:23:29 +0000 https://valcri.demo.steellondon.com/?p=1242 ...]]> This week we presented our work on human issues at the annual meeting of The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society HFES 2015. The conference of the world’s largest scientific association for human factors/ergonomics professionals was held in L.A. this year, which was again a great opportunity to exchange research results, discussions and getting to know new people.
Members of the Consortium shared their insights and presented two papers in the sensemaking and analytics session of the cognitive engineering and decision making group:

  • Haider, Johanna; Pohl, Margit; Hillemann, Eva; Attfield, Simon; Passmore, Peter and Wong, B.L. William: Exploring the Challenges of Implementing Guidelines for the Design of Visual Analytics Systems. Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 2015 Annual Meeting, 26th – 30th October, Los Angeles, (pp. tba)
