The system was well received and often compared against other analysis systems such as iBase, COPLINK, and Palantir. While the systems have some common functionality, VALCRI was praised for the ease with which it allowed performing analytical tasks.

First VALCRI Strategic Foresight and Scenario Planning Workshop for European police analysts https://euprojectvalcri.org/news/first-valcri-strategic-foresight-and-scenario-planning-workshop-for-european-police-analysts/ Mon, 07 Nov 2016 15:17:36 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1452 ...]]> The first VALCRI Strategic Foresight and Scenario Planning Workshop for European police analysts was carried out at Middlesex University in London from 31 Oct – 2 Nov 2016. The three-day workshop involved 22 police analysts from 6 European countries. The workshop leader, Chris Pallaris, Director of i-Intel, a partner of the VALCRI consortium, taught the course – which covered a variety of strategic forecasting and planning tools and techniques. Course participants used the frameworks to prepare strategic forecasts and assessments of their impacts on their Forces. The course was developed through i-Intel’s research in VALCRI. This course is one of the exploitable outcomes from the project that has already led to invitations from police forces to run similar courses at their sites but to be directly employed in the Force’s strategic planning activities. More courses will be trialled in next few months, for example, an Advanced Analyst Course to be held early November 2016 at the West Midlands Police.

Engaging with stakeholders at the British Academy https://euprojectvalcri.org/news/engaging-with-stakeholders-at-the-british-academy/ Mon, 07 Nov 2016 14:29:46 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1449 ...]]> On the suggestion of our partners at West Midlands Police, VALCRI was invited by the C-LINK Network to present a talk and provide a demonstration of VALCRI at the recent British Academy Conference on ‘Using Behavioural Science to Target Prolific Criminals’, on 17-18 Oct 2016, in London. The Conference was focused around advancing our understanding of issues surrounding the accuracy and reliability of the algorithms for Comparative Case Analysis and Comparative Link Analysis. This has obvious overlaps with how VALCRI computes similarity measures, the use of a self-evolving ontology, and ElasticSearch.

This inter-disciplinary community of computer scientists, forensic psychologists, sociologists, criminologists, and police crime analysts, use Signal Detection Theory as the method for assessing accuracy. Estimating the Area Under the Curve (the Receiver Operating Characteristics or ROC curve), sensitivity thresholds, and the occurrence of false positives, help us understand the usefulness of the algorithms used to predict the likelihood of linkages between crimes, e.g. were two crimes committed by the same person. Many UK police forces attended. A joint scientific workshop with C-LINK and VALCRI is being considered for the new year.

IEEE Infovis 2016 Best Paper Honorable Mention https://euprojectvalcri.org/valcri/ieee-infovis-2016-best-paper-honorable-mention/ Thu, 06 Oct 2016 13:11:57 +0000 https://euprojectvalcri.org/?p=1421 ...]]> A VALCRI research paper has been awarded Best Paper Honorable Mention at IEEE InfoVis, the premier venue for research in Data Visualization. The paper, entitled Map Lineups: Effects of Spatial Structure on Graphical Inference, considers perceptual biases introduced by Choropleth maps. As well as providing new evidence around how well humans are able to discern structure in maps, the paper contributes towards an emerging theory in data analysis of graphical inference. The award places the work amongst the top 3 of 165 papers submitted to this year’s InfoVis conference. The full paper, along with experiment data and analysis code, can be accessed from the paper’s website.

The paper will be presented on Tuesday, 25th Octoberin the InfoVis: Geovisualization paper session at IEEE InfoVis 2016 in Baltimore, US.
